Art & Design Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy centres on the conviction that art and design are academic processes as much as creative ones. I work to establish classrooms where students feel safe, supported, and challenged to take risks, explore independently, and reflect deeply. From the earliest years of secondary school, I introduce students to systematic creative processes: researching and analysing artworks, generating and developing ideas, experimenting with materials, and refining outcomes through reflection. This structured approach builds confidence, while also allowing space for experimentation, play, and personal passion.
I believe in teaching less and enabling students to do more. By reducing teacher talk and increasing student agency, I encourage learners to take ownership of their ideas and become proactive, independent thinkers. Just as importantly, I design my lessons and units to connect with authentic, real-world experiences—because students learn most effectively when they see the relevance of their work to the world around them.
